After weeks of persistent flooding, the UN now estimates that at least a full one-fifth of Pakistan -- a nation of 170 million people -- is underwater. And the New York Times reports that estimate is probably lowballing the full extent of the damage. 1,600 people are believed to have been killed, and 14 million have been either forced out of their homes or been impacted in some way. The tragedy has gotten so out of hand that Obama has tripled the amount of aid initially sent to the region for disaster relief. And with fresh flood warnings for the coming weekend, Pakistanis are bracing for even more calamity.... Read the full story on TreeHugger

To all those who've voiced concern that the federal government is just being too hard on poor ol' BP (here's looking at you Rep. Barton), perhaps you should take note of the following: There's a reason that BP needs to be held accountable for considerable damage its caused. It's called gross negligence, and not just in beginning a deep-water drilling operation it had no contingency plan for -- but also in cases like that its Texas oil refinery, where safety protocol was treated like a joke, and subsequently, a 2005 explosion left 15 dead. BP has now agreed to pay a record $50 million for its safety violations. ... Read the full story on TreeHugger

Okay, you get it. It's hot. Perhaps I've been ticked off by one too many 'global cooling' myth purveyors, but here it is -- another story about how hot it is this summer, and this year in general. NASA has released another report showing that from Jan. to July, 2010 is still the hottest year ever recorded. Last July was in a three-way tie for the hottest of that month ever recorded. And yes, while it's still a bit uncertain, all signs seem to point to 2010 being the hottest year ever. ... Read the full story on TreeHugger

It's been a hot, hot summer -- as if you needed me to tell you that. Dramatic heat-related stories grabbed headlines around the globe: The worst heat waves to hit Russia in a thousand years, the flooding in Pakistan, and 17 countries set or tied temperature records. Here's another interesting record that was set over the summer, one that's a little harder to fit into a sensational soundbite, but certainly noteworthy nonetheless: Pakistan also recorded what meteorologist wunderkind Dr. Jeff Masters calls "the hottest reliably measured temperature ever recorded on the continent of Asia."... The recent discovery of trace amounts of oil in blue crab larvae has left experts forecasting dire news for the Gulf ecosystem. It's evidence that the oil from the spill loosed from the Deepwater Horizon explosion has already begun working its way up the food chain -- where it could be fatal to animals who ingest it. ... The challenges presented by the BP spill that we occupy ourselves with are too often surface deep: the oiled birds, soiled coastline, out of work tour guides, and political wrangling make for immediately compelling, easily graspable narratives. Which is why I've tried throughout this ordeal to keep a focus on the damage done that most people will never see with their own eyes, things like BP's deployment of toxic dispersents that relegate the oil to the deep. And it's there in the deep -- out of sight from photojournalists, out of mind for the television news watchers -- where some of the most dire problems from the disaster may arise. Some new science on the subject gives us reason to be very, very concerned.... Read the full story on TreeHugger
